Microsoft brings Snapdragon X2 Plus to Surface Pro and Laptop

Microsoft has refreshed its two smallest Surface machines, the 13-inch Surface Laptop and the 12-inch Surface Pro, replacing the first-generation Snapdragon X Plus inside both with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Plus. The update was announced alongside Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit, both machines go on sale on 13 October, and the refresh comes with a real price increase rather than a like-for-like swap.

What the Snapdragon X2 Plus changes

Both devices use the six-core Snapdragon X2 Plus paired with a Qualcomm Adreno GPU, 16 to 24GB of LPDDR5x memory, and an NPU rated at 80 TOPS. That NPU figure comfortably clears Microsoft’s 40 TOPS threshold for Copilot+ PC features, the same bar every recent Snapdragon-based Surface has had to meet. Snapdragon Summit is usually where Qualcomm’s newest phone silicon debuts; the X2 Plus itself dates from earlier this year, and Microsoft is using the event to bring it into Surface hardware for the first time rather than waiting on whatever chip follows it. Full specifications are on Microsoft’s own announcement.

Microsoft’s own figures claim up to 18% better battery efficiency, more than 60% faster graphics, and 95% faster on-device AI processing versus the outgoing chip. Those are vendor numbers from Microsoft’s blog post, not results from independent testing, and nobody outside the company has run either machine through a benchmark suite yet.

Prices climb for both machines

The Surface Laptop 13-inch now starts at $1,199 and the Surface Pro 12-inch at $1,149. Tom’s Hardware notes that both figures are substantial jumps over the originals, which launched at $899 and $799. By our arithmetic that puts $300 onto the Surface Laptop and $350 onto the Surface Pro for this generation, on a tier that used to be Microsoft’s entry point into the lineup rather than a premium one.

A new Surface Mouse rode along

The same announcement introduced a new Surface Mouse with integrated haptic feedback and an action button, alongside these two machines rather than as a standalone accessory drop. We covered that mouse when it surfaced: Surface Mouse gets haptic feedback and an action button. What has changed since is that it now has a confirmed pairing: this Surface Pro and Surface Laptop refresh, both shipping 13 October, are the hardware it was announced to sit alongside.

The Surface Pro 12-inch also keeps support for the optional Surface Slim Pen and remains Microsoft’s smallest Windows-on-Arm tablet, in the same category as other Arm-based Windows machines such as HP’s Snapdragon X Elite-powered Googlebook 14, which took a different route by pairing that silicon with a 3K OLED panel rather than chasing the lowest price point.

What to watch

Both machines ship on 13 October. Whether the 18% battery, 60% graphics and 95% AI claims hold up against real hardware is a question for independent reviews once units are in hand, not for Microsoft’s own numbers.
