GrapheneOS confirms Motorola Signature 27 support

GrapheneOS has confirmed that the Motorola Signature 27 will be its first officially supported non-Pixel phone. For as long as the privacy-focused Android fork has existed, running it meant buying a Pixel, because GrapheneOS only ports itself to phones that clear its hardware bar, and no non-Google device had done so until now. The GrapheneOS Motorola Signature 27 pairing settles a question the project had left open since it announced its Motorola partnership in March: which phone would get the slot first.

GrapheneOS confirms Motorola Signature 27 support

The confirmation came directly from GrapheneOS’s official account on X, days after Motorola unveiled the Signature 27. An X user asked outright whether the new flagship would support GrapheneOS. “Yes, that will be the initial supported phone. Wait for official news about it,” the project replied. That is a direct answer, not a roadmap: GrapheneOS has not published a release build, a timeline, or install documentation for the phone, and it is telling people to wait for that news separately.

Until this reply, the Motorola side of the partnership was a promise without a product. GrapheneOS and Motorola confirmed in March that future Motorola phones would carry official support, but neither side had said which model would go first, or when. Given how selective the project has been about which phones it ports to, that expectation had been treated with some scepticism until this week’s reply. The Signature 27 launch made the question unavoidable, and GrapheneOS answered it in public rather than let speculation sit.

The hardware bar Motorola had to clear

GrapheneOS does not port itself to a phone as a courtesy. If a device is missing a hardware feature the project considers vital to security, that phone does not get a build, full stop. The Signature 27 qualifies because it carries a top-end Snapdragon chip and because Motorola has committed to the long-term software support GrapheneOS needs to keep shipping security patches for years rather than months.

Both requirements exist for the same reason Pixels were the only option for so long: a phone lacking the right security hardware, or a vendor unwilling to commit to years of patches, does not make the cut, whatever the rest of the spec sheet looks like.

What’s changed since our last GrapheneOS coverage

The Signature 27 also lands amid a broader shift away from Google’s own stack. GrapheneOS has spent recent weeks building its own RCS support to cut Google Messages out of the picture entirely, a move we covered on 7 September. A second supported phone maker fits the same direction: less dependence on any single vendor, for hardware or for services.

We covered the Motorola side of this on 24 August, when the rollout plan was confirmed but the first phone was not. That gap is now closed: it is the Signature 27, not a rumoured budget model or a future flagship. The confirmation also lands three weeks after Google cut a security feature GrapheneOS needed from the Pixel 11, the kind of decision that makes a second hardware partner look less like an option and more like insurance.

What to watch: GrapheneOS has confirmed the phone but not the build. There is no release date, no beta, and no install documentation yet, only the project’s word that official news is coming. Until that lands, the Signature 27 is a supported phone in name only.
