Nexus Mods releases open-source Unreal modding tools for Dawnwalker

Nexus Mods has released a set of open-source Unreal engine modding tools built to give modders a head start on The Blood of Dawnwalker, Rebel Wolves’ vampire RPG that carries more than a passing resemblance to The Witcher 3. The tools are aimed at stripping out some of the setup work that normally slows down the first wave of mods for any new Unreal Engine release, so that people modding Dawnwalker in its opening days aren’t starting from nothing.

Depending on region, the game arrived late on 2 September or first thing on 3 September, a detail reported by Rock Paper Shotgun, which broke the news of the tool release. Nexus Mods calls the toolset “streamlined”, and it’s open-source, meaning modders can inspect, adapt or extend it rather than working against a closed pipeline.

Why open-source Unreal engine modding tools matter

Modding a freshly launched Unreal Engine game usually starts from a disadvantage: no documentation, cooked assets and pak files that have to be picked apart by hand, and import and export pipelines that the community has to build before anyone can change so much as a texture or a mesh. That work normally happens over the weeks and months after launch, as modders reverse-engineer whatever the engine’s default packaging left them.

Publishing a base toolset alongside launch, instead of waiting for the community to arrive at one independently, compresses that timeline. It also means the tools modders end up using are shaped by people who work with Unreal Engine modding across many games, not just whoever got there first for this one. For players, that head start likely means the cosmetic and quality-of-life mods that usually take weeks to appear could turn up within the game’s first days instead, since the groundwork needed to open the game up won’t have to be reinvented by every mod author individually.

Nexus Mods’ second move in as many days

This follows Nexus Mods’ owner completing the acquisition of SteamDB, the Steam data-tracking site that had run independently for thirteen years, which we covered yesterday. Nexus Mods said at the time that SteamDB would keep operating as it always has, just with more resources behind it. Putting out an open-source modding toolset for a day-one Unreal Engine release less than 24 hours later suggests that additional backing is already turning into shipped work, rather than sitting as a line in an acquisition announcement.

The contrast with SteamDB is deliberate: that site is run by an independent, community-facing team that Nexus Mods promised not to disturb, while these new tools are core Nexus Mods engineering output, released to the public for free. Both are bets on maintaining trust in a network of hobbyist projects that Nexus Mods now sits above, rather than folding them straight into a single, closed platform.

What to watch

The real test is adoption: whether modders building for The Blood of Dawnwalker actually use Nexus Mods’ toolset instead of rolling their own, and whether Nexus Mods extends the same open-source approach to other Unreal Engine 5 titles as they launch, rather than treating this as a one-off tied to Dawnwalker.
