Apple has confirmed its first foldable iPhone will be called iPhone Duo, dropping the iPhone Ultra name that had circulated for months. The iPhone Duo price starts at $1,999 for the base 256GB configuration, coming in under some of the higher estimates that did the rounds ahead of today’s launch event.
The name went through three stages before Apple settled: iPhone Fold in the earliest reports, then iPhone Ultra once rumours hardened over the summer. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman published the Duo name just hours before the event, alongside colours, chip and pricing details that lined up with what Apple went on to announce.
iPhone Duo price and colours
The base model ships with 256GB of storage in white or dark blue, at $1,999. By our arithmetic, that works out to $7,809 per terabyte, the steepest per-gigabyte storage price on any current iPhone, and a reminder that Apple’s storage upgrades remain a margin play rather than a cost pass-through.
What’s inside the iPhone Duo
Apple’s A20 Pro chip powers the Duo, paired with a new in-house C2 modem rather than a third-party part. The rear carries two 48MP cameras, while the front houses a 12MP camera Apple describes as “designed for videoconferencing”, presumably tuned for the wider outer display used for calls when the phone is folded shut.
The finished shape lands closer to the squatter Galaxy Z Fold 8 than to Apple’s usual iPhones, rather than the taller, narrower cover screen some early renders had suggested. It is a proportions call that puts the outer display closer to a normal phone shape when the Duo is folded shut.
On durability, the Duo carries an IP68 rating against dust and water. That puts it level with foldables from Google and Honor, and comfortably ahead of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 line, which is rated IP48, a lower bar that leaves it more exposed to dust ingress specifically. The Duo also supports the USB-C Apple Pencil on both its inner and outer displays, a feature no Galaxy Fold currently matches.
How it lines up against the Galaxy Z Fold 8
Samsung was already sniping at Apple before the event, running an ad calling the Galaxy Z Fold 8 “the world’s lightest fold” hours ahead of the Duo’s reveal. On paper the Duo answers back with better dust protection and pen support, though Samsung’s Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra remain cheaper at their respective base tiers. Motorola has since teased a wider version of the Razr Fold as its own response, without giving a date.
Aside from the durability and pen gaps, the two phones are close on paper: similar chip tiers, matching megapixel counts on the main cameras, and a folding form factor that has converged on a similar squat aspect ratio rather than the taller cover screens Samsung favoured a few generations back.
The Duo’s launch also reframes Apple’s own line-up. We covered how the iPhone 18 Pro became Apple’s default flagship after price rises elsewhere in the range; the Duo now sits above it as a separate, considerably more expensive halo device rather than a replacement for the Pro tier.
What to watch next
The iPhone Duo ships in late October. Whether Samsung or Google adjust pricing or durability claims on their own foldables before then, and whether Motorola’s wider Razr Fold teaser turns into an actual product, are the two threads worth following out of this launch.
