Square Enix has confirmed that physical copies of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will need a day one download to play, because fitting the entire game onto a disc would have meant compromising it.
Series director Naoki Hamaguchi gave the reasoning directly: shipping the full adventure on a single disc would compromise “the quality of the final chapter.” Rather than trim content, cut assets, or split the release across multiple discs, Square Enix is treating the disc as a partial installer and pushing the remainder out as a mandatory download at launch. Hamaguchi hasn’t detailed how large that download is, or how much of the game ships on the disc itself versus over the network, only that a disc-only release wasn’t compatible with keeping the ending intact.
What compromising the final chapter would have meant
Remake and Rebirth both grew heavier as they moved through their respective stories, and the finale is traditionally where a Final Fantasy 7 project spends the most on cutscene density, environment detail and boss set-pieces. A disc has a fixed capacity; a live-service-style patch does not. Hamaguchi’s framing suggests the choice was between shrinking that final stretch to fit a physical cap, or leaving the disc as a base install and downloading the rest, and Square Enix picked the latter. It is not a new approach for big single-player releases, but it is a notable admission that a game explicitly built around player expectation for its ending would rather lean on broadband than trim it.
What’s changed since the release date reveal
We covered Final Fantasy 7 Revelation’s April 2027 release date earlier this month. That announcement didn’t touch on disc format at all. What’s new here is the first confirmation that owning a physical copy won’t mean owning a complete offline copy on release day, an important distinction for anyone planning to play without a stable connection at launch.
Hamaguchi also confirmed that his team, Creative Studio 1, is the same studio working on Kingdom Hearts 4, a project that surfaced last month through a Steam achievements leak alongside Fable and Persona 6. That doesn’t change anything about how Revelation ships, but it does explain why Hamaguchi is currently doing press for two mammoth projects from the same internal team at once.
What to watch
Square Enix hasn’t published a download size or specified what portion of the game sits on the disc out of the box. Expect that detail to surface closer to the April 2027 release, likely alongside box art and packaging specifics that usually accompany a format confirmation like this one.
