Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will need about 200GB of storage

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the closing chapter of the FF7 Remake trilogy, will need roughly 200GB of storage once installed, according to director Naoki Hamaguchi. Speaking to VGC at Tokyo Game Show 2026, Hamaguchi said the figure isn’t locked in yet, but that it’s “probably going to be around 200GB of game.” That would put Final Fantasy 7 Revelation well past what either of its predecessors demanded, and among the largest single-player releases on the market.

Why Hamaguchi says the size can’t be avoided

The size question matters because Revelation isn’t shipping digital-only. The retail edition ships on two Blu-ray discs, but as teqpost reported when covering the day one download requirement for the disc release, buyers still need to download a large chunk of the game before they can play it. A 200GB total makes that gap between disc contents and full install far bigger than anything the trilogy has asked of players so far.

Hamaguchi didn’t dodge the follow-up question about why the number has grown: “I understand there are a lot of opinions about this topic, but at the end of the day, the fact is we need to overcome the hardware to a certain extent.” It’s a rare admission from a director that a game’s footprint is a trade-off rather than a selling point, and it comes as Revelation is being built to be a larger game than Rebirth, which was already a considerably bigger release than the original Remake.

How Final Fantasy 7 Revelation’s file size has grown

The trend isn’t new. Final Fantasy 7 Remake asked for 100GB of drive space on Steam; Rebirth pushed that to 155GB. By our arithmetic, that’s a 55 percent jump between the first two instalments, and Revelation’s projected 200GB would add a further 29 percent on top of Rebirth. Three games, three storage increases, each larger than the one before it.

That scale isn’t unique to Revelation. Big-budget single-player games across the industry have been creeping past 100GB for several years as textures, cutscenes and localisation assets pile up, and consoles have leaned on faster SSDs specifically to cope with installs that size. Hamaguchi’s “overcome the hardware” line reads as an acknowledgement that Square Enix is building for what current-generation storage and load speeds can handle, rather than trimming the game to fit an older baseline, a trade-off that matters most for players still running games off mechanical hard drives instead of SSDs.

What Switch 2 owners should watch

A 200GB install would be tight on Switch 2, which KitGuru points out ships with only 256GB of internal storage, leaving little room for anything else once Revelation is on the console. Hamaguchi’s figure is also not final. Square Enix hasn’t published full system requirements for Revelation, and the game is still roughly six months from release, so the number could move before launch.

The same Tokyo Game Show 2026 interview also touched on DLC plans built around Sephiroth and Vincent Valentine, though Hamaguchi hasn’t detailed their scope, price or size yet. Whether the install figure comes down before launch, what system requirements Square Enix eventually publishes, and what those DLC plans actually include are the things worth watching as Final Fantasy 7 Revelation approaches its release window.
