Modders unlock DLSS Multi Frame Generation on RTX 40

A mod called MFGAdaUnlock now lets GeForce RTX 40-series graphics cards run DLSS Multi Frame Generation, the 3x and 4x frame-generation modes Nvidia has restricted to its RTX 50-series Blackwell GPUs since DLSS 4 launched. With the patch applied, Ada Lovelace hardware runs Nvidia’s own DLSS-G frame-generation code at multipliers the drivers normally refuse to allow.

RTX 40 cards already run DLSS-G for standard Frame Generation, which inserts one interpolated frame between each pair of rendered frames. Multi Frame Generation inserts a second and third interpolated frame on top of that, multiplying output by 3x or 4x rather than 2x. Nvidia has kept that higher multiplier locked to RTX 50 cards since launch, even though the interpolation pipeline underneath is shared across both generations. Because the extra frames are interpolated rather than rendered by the game engine, input latency tracks the base frame rate before multiplication, not the on-screen frame counter Multi Frame Generation produces.

How the DLSS Multi Frame Generation mod works

MFGAdaUnlock, published on GitHub as part of the RenoDx project, does not replace or reverse-engineer Nvidia’s frame-generation code. It patches the memory restrictions that stop Nvidia’s own DLSS-G routines from running above 2x on Ada silicon, then lets those unmodified routines execute at 3x and 4x. Early demonstrations in Cyberpunk 2077 confirmed the higher multipliers run on RTX 40 hardware and produce the extra interpolated frames Blackwell cards generate natively.

A driver update briefly broke the unlock

The mod stopped working when Nvidia shipped DLSS-G provider 310.9, which renamed the temporal kernel and changed its descriptor layouts enough to invalidate the existing patch, according to KitGuru. Modders shipped version 0.4 of MFGAdaUnlock within days, restoring Ada-specific temporal-position correction and fixing frame-pacing problems and duplicate frames that had shown up at 3x and 4x. With that fix in place, RTX 40 cards run the current 310.9 provider with Multi Frame Generation enabled again.

What we know that Nvidia hasn’t said

Nvidia has not commented on the mod, and Multi Frame Generation still is not officially supported on RTX 40-series GPUs. That means performance, latency and frame pacing depend on a driver check being bypassed rather than a mode Nvidia tuned for Ada, so results will vary from card to card and are unlikely to match Nvidia’s own Blackwell implementation. The MFGAdaUnlock repository is the primary record of what the patch actually changes, including the fixes made for provider 310.9, and is the better reference than any summary of it.

This is not the first time modders have pushed a new Nvidia feature onto hardware it was not sold for. Earlier this year the same instinct got DLSS 5 running on AMD’s RDNA 4 GPUs, using a similar approach of running Nvidia’s code paths outside Nvidia’s own hardware list. Both cases raise the same question for owners of older cards: the software gate, not the silicon, is what is actually being unlocked.

What to watch: whether Nvidia ships another provider update that breaks MFGAdaUnlock again, and whether Nvidia responds by loosening the RTX 40 restriction now that Ada has been shown to run the workload without official support.
