AMD reportedly working on Neural Lighting to rival DLSS 5

AMD is rumoured to be building a neural rendering feature for its next-generation Radeon architecture, a lighting technology pitched as a rival to NVIDIA’s DLSS 5.

The claim comes from Kepler_L2, a leaker with a long track record on AMD hardware, posting on the AnandTech forums. According to the leak, AMD Neural Lighting would use machine learning to compute in-game lighting rather than relying on traditional ray tracing pipelines, putting it in the same category as DLSS 5’s neural rendering work. Asked whether the feature would be exclusive to RDNA 5, Kepler_L2 said that’s probably the case, because the workload involved is heavy enough that older hardware likely can’t carry it. AMD has not confirmed RDNA 5 by name, and this is a single-source claim, so it should be read as a rumour rather than a roadmap.

What AMD Neural Lighting is claimed to do

AMD’s current FSR stack handles upscaling and frame generation, but it stops before lighting: that’s still computed by the game’s own ray tracing or rasterisation pipeline. Neural Lighting, as described, would push AMD’s neural workload further into the rendering pipeline, using a trained model to compute lighting rather than just upscaling a finished frame. That’s the same direction NVIDIA has taken with ray reconstruction and DLSS since: a model doing more of the rendering work, not just cleaning up the output at the end.

Beyond the concept, Kepler_L2 offered a wishlist rather than a spec sheet, and it’s worth keeping the two separate. TechPowerUp’s write-up carries the leaker’s own view on how AMD’s approach should differ from NVIDIA’s: the model should have direct access to raw game data such as geometry and depth buffers instead of inferring scene details from a rendered frame, and lighting and shading should run as separate models rather than one combined pipeline. That’s Kepler_L2’s preference for how AMD should build it, not a description of what AMD is actually shipping.

What’s changed since our last look at DLSS 5 on Radeon

We’ve covered DLSS 5 on AMD hardware before, but from the other direction: modders, not AMD. On 6 September we reported modders had got DLSS 5 running on AMD’s RDNA 4 GPUs outside NVIDIA’s own ecosystem, and a day later found the trick ran up to 127% faster when paired with a second GPU. Neural Lighting, if it’s real, is the opposite move: AMD building its own neural rendering pipeline rather than borrowing NVIDIA’s, native to its hardware instead of grafted on.

AMD hasn’t confirmed RDNA 5 by name, and estimates for when AMD’s first RDNA 5 GPUs might ship range from mid-2027 to early 2028 depending on the source. Kepler_L2’s own comment that the workload is “pretty heavy” points at RDNA 5-only support, so current RX 9000-series owners would need to upgrade to see it, assuming any of this survives from leak to shipping product.

What to watch next

Nothing here is confirmed by AMD, so the next real signal will be whether the company acknowledges RDNA 5 or any neural rendering work at all, rather than further leaker detail. Given the wide launch window, that confirmation is unlikely before 2027.
