Intel scraps 12-core Xe GPU for Nova Lake-S desktop chips

Intel has reportedly cancelled a Nova Lake-S desktop chip that paired a standard core layout with a 12-core Xe3P integrated GPU, shifting the design onto the following Razor Lake generation instead. The change comes from tipster Jaykihn, who first flagged the Nova Lake-S gaming APU earlier this year as a way to put gaming-capable graphics on a desktop chip that needs no discrete card.

What the cancelled Nova Lake-S gaming APU would have offered

The scrapped SKU combined four P-cores, eight E-cores and four LPE-cores with 12 Xe3P graphics cores, a configuration meant to serve as an inexpensive onramp to gaming desktops that skip a discrete GPU entirely. Driving that much integrated graphics wasn’t going to be free: the iGPU alone was said to need 65W of dedicated power, which would have required motherboard makers to fit two VCCGT phases just for graphics.

For comparison, Intel’s Arc B390, the 12 Xe3-core GPU already shipping inside Panther Lake and Arc G-series chips, has a thermal design rated to sustain up to 80W, though it currently runs in Panther Lake laptops and handhelds such as the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ at lower power targets than that ceiling. Nova Lake’s desktop stack is rumoured to top out at 175W TDP with a 52-core flagship, and Intel apparently found the numbers didn’t add up further down the stack either: the full 12 Xe3P iGPU was reportedly only ever viable in that one 4+8+4+12 configuration, not across the wider range.

Why Xe3P doesn’t fit the desktop lineup yet

Xe3P is a newer graphics architecture than the Xe3 cores in Arc B390, built to scale up to 32 Xe cores with a deeper XMX engine that adds low-precision FP8 and FP4 support, 512KB of L1 cache per Xe core, and a new unified L2 cache, 32MB in its one confirmed application. That application is Crescent Island, Intel’s AI accelerator, and Xe3P hasn’t been confirmed for anything else. Fitting a 12-core version of an architecture built primarily for an accelerator card into a mainstream desktop socket, at 65-80W, on top of P-cores, E-cores and LPE-cores already sharing a power budget, looks like the part of the plan that didn’t survive contact with Nova Lake’s actual TDP limits.

What’s changed since our last Nova Lake coverage

We covered the Nova Lake generation’s new Core Ultra naming scheme on 20 August, and followed it two days later with Intel’s plans for a 4-core Arc G3 iGPU aimed at cheap handhelds. Neither leak mentioned a 12-core Xe3P option on the desktop side. Tom’s Hardware reports the entry was relabelled from “Nova Lake-S 12Xe” to “Razor Lake-S 12Xe” on 14 September 2026, the day before this story broke, which points to a decision made late in Nova Lake’s desktop planning rather than something scoped out from the start.

Also unresolved is where this leaves Nova Lake AX, the mobile APU rumoured earlier in the year to counter AMD’s Strix Halo and Gorgon Halo chips with a large unified memory pool and a sizeable iGPU. If the desktop 12 Xe3P part couldn’t clear Nova Lake’s power budget, the mobile variant faces the same arithmetic with a tighter thermal envelope.

What to watch

Whether the 4+8+4+12 configuration resurfaces with Razor Lake, and whether Intel confirms Xe3P for any product beyond Crescent Island before then, are the two threads worth following. Nova Lake-S desktop chips are still on track to launch without the 12 Xe3P option.
