Sony has started rolling out Android 17 to the Xperia 1 VIII, the first major software update for its current flagship. The Xperia Android 17 update carries software version 73.1.A.2.61, weighs around 1.2GB over the air, and is currently live in the UK and Germany, with a wider European rollout expected over the coming weeks. At 1.2GB, the download is sized like a full platform update rather than a routine security patch, in keeping with a jump from Android 16 to Android 17 rather than a monthly bugfix.
What the Xperia Android 17 update changes
The Xperia 1 VIII launched running Android 16, so this is its first taste of Google’s newest platform release layered with Sony’s own additions. According to Sony’s published changelog, the update brings a Desktop mode for connecting the phone to an external display, new customisation options for the home screen and lock screen, improved screen recording, and custom camera looks that let owners save their own colour and tone presets rather than picking only from Sony’s built-in defaults.
Notebookcheck describes the release as the Xperia 1 VIII’s biggest update yet, and reports that Sony also plans to bring Android 17 to several more affordable Xperia phones beyond the 1 VI and 1 VII, though it has not said which ones. GSMArena’s report notes the update was first flagged by users in Europe before Sony’s rollout became widely visible, and that it is “undoubtedly going to spread to more regions in the coming days and weeks.”
Which Xperia phones are getting Android 17
AndroidAuthority reports that Sony lists five Xperia phones as eligible for Android 17, naming the Xperia 1 VI and Xperia 1 VII alongside the Xperia 1 VIII that is already receiving the update. The other two eligible models were not named in Sony’s changelog.
- Xperia 1 VIII, receiving the update now
- Xperia 1 VII, listed as eligible
- Xperia 1 VI, listed as eligible
Sony has not published a timeline for when the Xperia 1 VII and Xperia 1 VI will actually receive the build, only that they are on the eligible list alongside the 1 VIII.
How this compares with the Xperia 10 VIII launch
Teqpost covered the Sony Xperia 10 VIII launch last month, when the mid-range phone shipped with barely any changes over its predecessor and a higher price. This update is a different kind of Sony release. Rather than a slow-moving hardware refresh, it delivers a same-generation software upgrade with a genuinely new feature, Desktop mode, that the 10 VIII did not launch with.
It is also a contrast in how Sony treats its two Xperia lines. The flagship 1 VIII is getting Google’s newest Android build within months of the phone’s launch, while last month’s Xperia 10 VIII arrived as a modest refresh with few changes and a higher price than its predecessor. Software support, not just hardware specs, is turning into one of the clearer dividing lines between Sony’s flagship and mid-range phones.
What to watch: whether Sony extends the Android 17 rollout beyond the UK and Germany in the coming weeks, and when the Xperia 1 VII and Xperia 1 VI get their own update windows.
