Google replaces Gemini Gems with a new skills feature

Google has confirmed it is retiring Gemini Gems, the custom assistants users could build inside Gemini, and will begin converting them automatically into a new Gemini Skills feature from 17 November 2026. The notice now shows as a banner inside the Gems manager itself, closing out months of speculation that started after code in the Google app hinted at the change. Anyone who built Gems for a specific job, hobby or writing style gets some continuity, since existing Gems migrate rather than simply vanishing, but the new system runs under different rules, so this isn’t a straight rename.

A Gem was a saved bundle of instructions, and sometimes uploaded reference files, that made Gemini behave the same way every time it was opened: a code reviewer tuned to one style guide, a recipe assistant that always converts to metric, that sort of thing. Custom Gems built by individual users, Google’s own premade Gems, and Gems that had been shared between users all fall under the same migration. Gemini has already started showing the switch-over notice to users in Germany, ahead of the global rollout on 17 November.

What the Gemini Skills feature requires

According to Notebookcheck, skills carry conditions Gems never did: the account’s Keep Activity setting has to be switched on, and access is restricted to users over 18. Neither restriction applied to Gems, so anyone who has Keep Activity turned off will need to enable it to keep whatever a Gem becomes, or risk losing it at the changeover. Google hasn’t said what happens to a Gem whose owner never turns that setting on.

There’s a gap the announcement leaves open, too: it doesn’t say whether users on the free tier, without a paid Google AI subscription, will be able to use skills at all once Gems are gone. For anyone running Gems on a free account, that’s the detail worth tracking before 17 November, not the rename itself.

Why Gemini is consolidating now

The Gems sunset isn’t an isolated tidy-up. Google is running the same consolidation on phones: it started phasing out Google Assistant in favour of Gemini on 4 September, and the option to switch back to Assistant has already disappeared from the Gemini app’s account menu on a number of Android handsets. Two separately branded features, one for task-specific bots and one for voice control, are being folded into a single Gemini surface within weeks of each other.

That timing lines up with pressure from outside Google, too. All-in-one agents are shipping without asking users to hand-build a task-specific bot first, which is the exact workflow Gems required. Teqpost has covered what can go wrong when an all-in-one agent is left to use its own judgement, including the incident where Meta’s Muse invited a buyer into a marketplace listing without being asked. Google’s bet is that folding Gems into a broader skills system, rather than maintaining a separate builder tool, keeps Gemini competitive with that shift while keeping a task’s execution inside a defined skill rather than an open-ended agent.

What to watch before 17 November

Two dates matter here. The first is 17 November 2026, when the automatic conversion begins worldwide; anyone with Gems they rely on should open the Gems manager beforehand and confirm Keep Activity is switched on if they want the migration to carry across cleanly. The second is whether Google clarifies free-tier access before that date, since right now a Gem builder on the free tier has no confirmation their work survives the switch at all.
