iPhone Duo comparison puts Galaxy Z Fold 8 on notice

The iPhone Duo comparison that actually matters is not against Samsung’s tall, narrow foldables. It’s against the Galaxy Z Fold 8, the only current Samsung device built on the same passport-style, book-opening layout as Apple’s phone, and priced only $100 apart from it. That single pairing has already pushed Samsung to reconsider its own foldable roadmap.

The iPhone Duo comparison Samsung can’t ignore

Coverage of the iPhone Duo has run as a series of head-to-head pieces against three current Android foldables, tackled separately rather than in one round-up. Of the three, the Fold 8 is doing the real work, because it shares the Duo’s wide, squarish aspect ratio instead of the tall, thin shape used elsewhere in the foldable market, and because Apple priced the Duo close enough to Samsung’s flagship that the two are being shopped against each other rather than against something cheaper.

Analysts expect Apple’s arrival to expand the foldable category overall rather than simply pull buyers from Samsung. That’s cold comfort if the Fold 8 is the specific phone losing the side-by-side comparison, which is reportedly why Samsung is now looking at moving up the Galaxy Z TriFold 2.

Samsung’s Home Up bug undercuts the momentum

The timing is awkward, because the Fold 8, which by Samsung’s own account has outsold its internal projections since launch, is also carrying a home-screen bug right now. Owners have been reporting on Samsung’s community forum that app icons are drifting into places they shouldn’t be, overlapping other icons and in some cases moving beyond the edges of their intended grid, with no way to relocate them. Samsung has confirmed the issue and says it’s fixed in Home Up version 18.0.00.36, according to Android Authority, which documented the glitch and the update that resolves it.

What’s changed since our last look at the Fold 8

We wrote after Samsung cast a real Tim Cook to sell the Galaxy Z Fold 8 that the company was leaning on marketing to hold ground against Apple. That was an advertising response. Moving up the Galaxy Z TriFold 2, if Samsung actually does it, is a product roadmap response instead: shipping a second, pricier foldable form factor earlier than planned, not just running new ads for the one already on shelves.

It also follows from what we found when the iPhone Duo reviews landed: the gaps we flagged there were about Android foldable software polish, not Samsung’s hardware line-up. This time Samsung is responding on the hardware side.

By our arithmetic, the original iPhone Duo/Fold 8 comparison published 29.7 hours before the first report of Samsung weighing an early TriFold 2 launch. That’s a fast turn from a device comparison to a roadmap rethink, and it suggests Samsung’s unease with the Fold 8’s positioning predates the outlets putting the numbers side by side.

What to watch

Two concrete things: whether Samsung actually confirms an accelerated Galaxy Z TriFold 2 launch date rather than just fielding the rumour, and whether the Home Up 18.0.00.36 update actually clears the app-misalignment bug for the Fold 8 owners still waiting on the patch.
