iPhone Duo reviews are in, and Android has homework

The first iPhone Duo reviews are in, and the early verdict from two of Android’s most-read outlets is more measured than the pre-launch marketing fight around Apple’s foldable suggested. 9to5Google’s Ben Schoon writes that the iPhone Duo did not reinvent the Android foldable, but that it got the most important aspects right, enough that he expects it to give Android’s foldable makers some things to work on. Android Authority goes further: a reviewer with roughly 15 years of Android use, across Symbian and Tizen phones as well as Android ones, says they are ready to switch.

What the first iPhone Duo reviews found

Schoon’s framing is the more cautious of the two: Apple’s foldable is a solid first attempt rather than a reinvention, and its value is as much in what it forces competitors to fix as in what it does itself. That is a familiar Apple pattern, arriving late to a category and getting the fundamentals right rather than the features first.

Android Authority’s account is more personal, and that is what makes it worth reading in full. The reviewer has spent years with the best foldable phones on the market and liked a few of them, but never bought into the pitch: a phone that becomes a tablet for media or multitasking sounds good on paper, and the hardware and software integration has never quite delivered on it. That a 15-year Android user is now considering leaving over Apple’s first attempt at the form factor is a bigger admission than any spec-sheet comparison would be.

What’s changed since Samsung’s weight complaints

We covered the run-up to this launch as it happened. On 11 September, Samsung’s marketing took aim at the iPhone Duo’s weight, using a spec-sheet number against a phone almost nobody had actually held. The following day, Samsung went further and cast a Tim Cook look-alike to sell the Galaxy Z Fold 8 off the back of it.

Neither of these first-impression pieces leads with weight. Both lead with how the thing feels to actually use, which is a different argument to the one Samsung was making before anyone outside Apple had touched the phone. That is the gap between a marketing complaint and a review: one is written to move a spec sheet, the other after someone has lived with the hardware.

What to watch next

Both pieces linked above are excerpts of longer reviews still to publish in full, so neither outlet’s verdict on battery life, hinge durability or long-term software fit is settled yet. Also worth watching is whether Schoon’s prediction holds: that Android’s foldable makers, having spent the past week attacking the iPhone Duo on stage and in ads, now have to answer it on hardware instead.
