Xbox Game Pass Ultimate testing personalised discount pricing

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is showing a personalised, discounted rate to some subscribers instead of the flat, advertised price. A Reddit user named synthlov3r posted a screenshot on r/XboxGamePass of an offer for $16.09 a month, locked in for twelve months before reverting to the standard $22.99 rate, which comes to $193.08 for the year against $275.88 at full price. Other subscribers replying to the same thread reported different figures, some closer to $18 or $20 a month, and some saw no discount at all, which points to Game Pass Ultimate pricing now being set per account rather than published as one flat rate.

What subscribers are being shown

One commenter in the same thread, flagged by TechPowerUp, said their secondary Xbox account received the discounted offer while their main account did not, despite both being long-standing subscriptions. That detail points to targeting based on account history or engagement rather than region or device, though Microsoft hasn’t described the criteria it’s using.

The timing lines up with Game Pass Ultimate’s recent price history: the tier dropped from $29.99 to $22.99 in April, reportedly after the earlier hike cost Microsoft subscribers. Under CEO Asha Sharma, Xbox has already talked about making Game Pass pricing more flexible, and a win-back discount aimed at price-sensitive or lapsed accounts fits that direction. Microsoft has not confirmed any of this as an official programme, so the figures should be treated as anecdotal for now.

The mechanism differs from April’s cut, which applied to every account on the tier at once. A personalised offer instead targets specific subscribers, typically people who cancelled, downgraded, or show other signs of price sensitivity, without touching the $22.99 sticker price for everyone else. That lets Microsoft test how small a discount it can get away with to keep or win back a given subscriber, at the cost of two people on the same tier paying different amounts for the same service. It also isn’t something a subscriber can ask for; it either shows up on their account or it doesn’t.

Where the Game Pass Ultimate pricing test fits in

This is the second Game Pass adjustment Microsoft has tested inside a few weeks. teqpost covered the rollout of hour limits and a pay-as-you-go option for Xbox Cloud Gaming, due to take effect in November for subscribers in the UK, US and Canada. That change applied by region, with the same cut-off for everyone inside it. The pricing test looks different: two subscribers in the same market, on the same tier, appear to be shown different numbers based on their own account rather than where they live. Read together, the two moves suggest Microsoft is now willing to adjust both access and Game Pass Ultimate pricing per account, not just per region.

Microsoft has not said whether the discounted rate will roll out further or stay a limited test. Worth watching is whether it settles into a standing win-back offer for lapsed subscribers, or quietly disappears the way earlier undocumented Xbox promotions have. The cloud-gaming hour limits land in November; if the pricing test is part of the same subscriber-retention push, expect more targeted offers to surface before then.
