RPCS3 emulator now plays PS3 games straight from the disc

RPCS3, the open-source PS3 emulator, now lets players run games straight from a physical Blu-ray disc instead of dumping the disc to a hard drive or SSD first. The team announced the change on X, and this RPCS3 disc support now spans Windows, Linux, macOS and FreeBSD, so the feature no longer favours one platform over the others. It works, the team says, with games released as far back as twenty years ago, and without RPCS3 needing to reach out to any servers to do it.

How RPCS3’s disc support works

The team is calling it plug and play: put the disc in a compatible drive, and RPCS3 reads and runs the game directly, the same way a PS3 would. There is no intermediate rip-and-store step, so the emulator no longer needs a copy of the game sitting on local storage before it will boot anything. Package installations run from the disc drive are also reportedly faster now than in earlier builds.

A compatible Blu-ray drive is still required. RPCS3 maintains a running list of supported models on its site, currently covering drives from:

  • LG
  • ASUS
  • Samsung
  • Lite-On
  • Sony
  • HP
  • Plextor
  • BenQ

Platforms, contributors and what changed

The feature started out Windows-only and has since been extended to Linux, macOS and FreeBSD. According to TechPowerUp, PS4 and PS5 owners running Linux can even launch PS3 games directly from a disc through RPCS3, which is a fairly specific use case but not a small one given how many PlayStation owners now dual-boot or run Linux distributions on their consoles. Credit for the work goes to contributors digant73 and Megamouse, per the RPCS3 team.

The project had already added Steam library integration, letting emulated games appear and launch alongside the rest of a Steam library, so direct disc support is really the second piece of the same push toward treating emulated PS3 games like any other title someone owns.

Why this cuts against Sony’s own direction

The timing is what makes this worth noting. Sony is ending physical disc production for new PlayStation games starting January 2028, and teqpost has already covered the company’s parallel argument in court that a reasonable buyer does not actually own the digital games they pay for.

RPCS3 adding faster, friction-free support for physical PS3 discs runs directly opposite to both of those positions: it is a project making old physical media more useful at the exact moment the platform holder is retiring physical media and disputing what ownership of a digital copy even means. Anyone who still has a PS3 collection sitting in a cupboard now has a stronger reason to keep it than someone buying into Sony’s current or future digital storefronts.

It also lands in a busier emulation year generally. An early PS5 emulator already runs Grand Theft Auto V at 60fps before it crashes, and RPCS3 shipping smoother physical media support in the same window suggests emulation projects are treating actual game ownership, discs included, as work worth doing properly rather than an afterthought.

What to watch

Whether RPCS3’s compatible-drive list grows beyond the current eight brands is worth checking, since drive support has been the main practical limit on who can use this feature. It’s also worth watching whether other emulation projects add their own direct-disc paths as physical PlayStation media becomes scarcer after Sony’s 2028 cutoff.
