Xbox will let you claim digital copies of your disc games

Microsoft has switched on a disc-to-digital feature for Xbox One and Series X, letting anyone with a physical game disc claim a digital entitlement for that same title without handing the disc over. The announcement, posted on Xbox Wire, confirms support for Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming, so a claimed game plays across Xbox consoles, Windows PC and the cloud the same way a purchase from the digital store does. Microsoft says Xbox Insiders can start testing the disc-to-digital feature from 31 August 2026.

How the disc-to-digital feature works

The process is deliberately simple. Insert an eligible Xbox One or Series X disc, launch the game once, and the console claims a digital entitlement for that title. From then on it shows up in your digital library alongside anything bought outright, with Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming access “where supported”. The disc itself keeps working exactly as before: you can still play from it, lend it, or sell it, because claiming the entitlement doesn’t consume or lock the physical copy.

Microsoft frames the feature as a fix for a library that’s grown messy over two decades: “Players have spent decades building their Xbox libraries. Some games were purchased on disc. Some were purchased digitally. Many span multiple generations of hardware.” The company describes the result as bringing “the benefits of digital to physical discs”, rather than replacing one with the other.

How many games are actually covered

Microsoft’s own post is vague on scale: “most” Xbox One and Series X disc games qualify, “thousands” of titles are supported, more are being added over time, and not every disc-based game will be available at launch. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma gave a firmer figure in a BBC interview reported by Eurogamer: 1,000 titles supported initially across both consoles. That’s noticeably short of what “thousands” suggests, and Microsoft hasn’t explained the gap, whether it’s a current count against an eventual target or something else entirely. Until Microsoft publishes an actual list, owners of older or more obscure discs won’t know if they qualify without inserting them and checking.

Sharma’s interview also settled a question the blog post left open: the digital entitlement transfers with the disc. Sell or gift a disc after claiming its entitlement, and the new owner can claim their own digital copy through the same process, rather than inheriting a disc that’s already been redeemed by someone else.

What it means for physical media

The timing matters. Sony has already said its next PlayStation will drop discs altogether, and the direction of travel across the industry is toward digital-only libraries. Xbox’s feature cuts a different way for now: it gives a physical disc collection a reason to exist even after you’ve moved to cloud saves and cross-platform play, since the disc is no longer a dead end once a console generation ends. It’s a similar calculation to the one facing anyone eyeing the next hardware cycle, including the leaked Xbox Series X25, where deciding what to buy on disc versus digitally now carries different stakes.

What to watch

Microsoft hasn’t given a date for the feature to leave Xbox Insider testing, and it still hasn’t published which of its “thousand-or-so” titles qualify at launch. Both will decide whether “most” games really covers most of what’s actually sitting in people’s disc collections.
