Bungie will bring back vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns

Bungie says it will free more vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns and raids from storage, doubling down on a course correction that began with a decision to bring back older content, while admitting that Marathon “did not reach as many players as we had hoped” since it launched.

Which vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns are returning

The studio hasn’t published a list of which campaigns or raids come back, or a timeline for any of it. What it has said is that the direction reverses years of moving older content out of the live game to keep Destiny 2’s footprint manageable. Bungie’s earlier decision to scale back Destiny 2 development was followed by layoffs, a detail Rock Paper Shotgun reported alongside the studio’s reversal of that call and its declaration that Destiny is “foundational” to its future.

A second reversal in a week

We covered Bungie’s initial reversal on the content vault on 21 September, when the studio said it would bring back old raids. This latest statement goes further, extending the unvaulting to campaigns as well, and it explicitly ties the decision to Marathon’s underperformance, a link the September announcement didn’t make. Bungie is now presenting Destiny 2 as the priority its future is built around, rather than a live-service game being quietly wound down in favour of a newer shooter.

Why the vault was hard to reverse

Content that moved into the Destiny Content Vault wasn’t simply hidden behind a menu. Its assets were stripped out of the live client entirely to keep Destiny 2’s install size and matchmaking pools manageable as the game aged. Reversing that is not a flag flip: Bungie has to re-integrate maps, encounters and questlines into a client that has moved on technically since they were removed. That is presumably why the studio still hasn’t said which campaigns or raids come back first.

What it means for players

For anyone still logged into Destiny 2, the practical effect is straightforward: campaigns and raids that were previously unplayable, regardless of whether you owned the expansion they originally shipped in, become accessible again. That matters most for newer or returning players who joined after specific story arcs were pulled, and for raid teams who lost access to loot pools tied to vaulted encounters.

Marathon’s rocky start

Marathon launched as Bungie’s bet on the extraction-shooter genre, a crowded space with established players already holding audiences. The studio’s admission that the game “did not reach as many players as we had hoped” is a rare public concession from a studio that has generally been careful about how it frames performance. Bungie says Marathon still “needs to evolve,” and that development on it continues, but the resources and attention have visibly shifted back towards Destiny 2, the game the studio spent recent years trying to scale back in favour of new projects.

What to watch next

Bungie hasn’t set dates for which campaigns or raids return, or confirmed whether Marathon gets a broader relaunch or just incremental updates. Expect Destiny 2’s return schedule to firm up faster than Marathon’s, given where the studio’s latest statement places its weight, and expect more detail on both in the studio’s next update.
