PS5 emulator runs GTA V at 60 FPS before it crashes

The KytyPS5 emulator can now run the PS5 version of Grand Theft Auto V on PC at up to 60 FPS, though it still crashes within a few minutes of the opening mission starting. A demonstration posted to X on 5 September by user ihc160 shows the game’s North Yankton prologue running at 40 to 60 FPS, fluctuating with how much is happening on screen, before the emulator gives out. It is a sharp jump from where the PS5 emulator GTA 5 project stood roughly a month earlier, when the game was still stuck at its opening splash screen.

How the PS5 emulator handles GTA 5

The demo ran on a high-end PC pairing a 9950X3D-class CPU with a Radeon RX 7900 XT GPU. Coverage disagrees on the exact chip: one report describes a Ryzen 7 9950X3D, another a Ryzen 9 9950X3D. Either way, this is far from an average gaming rig, and the emulator still needed all of it just to hold 40 to 60 FPS for a few minutes before crashing, well short of the police encounter that follows shortly after in the prologue.

TechPowerUp puts the starting point further back: in July, GTA V had only reached its in-game menus on the emulator, months before this week’s playable stretch. The outlet also notes that SharpEmu, the other major PS5 emulation project, is taking a slower route, prioritising low-level accuracy and infrastructure over individual game compatibility.

KytyPS5 itself is open-source and published on GitHub, where the pace of commits reflects how quickly compatibility is expanding. Beyond GTA V, the emulator’s current playable list includes Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered, Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life, Pac-Man World Re-PAC and Double Drag, none of which carry anywhere near the technical demands of an open-world game built around a live economy and physics-driven traffic.

Why this matters before GTA VI

When teqpost covered GTA 6’s extended look debuting on Netflix on 29 August, Rockstar had not said a word about a PC release, let alone whether GTA VI would arrive on PC at launch or years later, the way GTA V eventually did. That silence is exactly why the KytyPS5 progress matters: without an official port, this emulator and SharpEmu are becoming the only route curious PC players have towards early access to Rockstar’s next game, even if that route currently means minutes of gameplay before a crash.

Getting the PS5 build of GTA V through its opening mission is one thing. A title with as much open-world overhead as GTA VI is a considerably higher bar, and nothing in this demo suggests that bar is close to being cleared.

What to watch: whether KytyPS5’s next update pushes stability past the opening mission into GTA V’s open world, where traffic density, NPC counts and physics load are far heavier than a scripted prologue. If that holds at 60 FPS for more than a few minutes, it will be the clearest signal yet of how close unofficial PS5 emulation is getting, and how much pressure that puts on Rockstar to clarify GTA VI’s PC plans.
