Pixel 11 Pro camera’s telephoto sensor gets a quiet upgrade

The Pixel 11 Pro camera’s telephoto sensor is physically larger than the one in the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro, letting it focus on subjects much closer to the lens, and Google never listed the change on its spec sheet.

The change surfaced when a Reddit user posted side-by-side comparison shots, and Android Authority, which first reported the discrepancy, says Google has not responded to a request for comment on why the closer-focusing telephoto camera never made it into the phone’s marketing. The resolution itself hasn’t changed: the 9 Pro, 10 Pro and 11 Pro all use a 48-megapixel telephoto sensor. What changed is the sensor’s physical size, which is larger in the 11 Pro than in either predecessor even though the pixel count stayed the same.

What the Pixel 11 Pro camera upgrade actually changes

A larger sensor at an unchanged resolution means larger individual photosites, the light-gathering wells sitting behind each pixel. Bigger photosites collect more light per pixel, which is normally the mechanism behind two visible gains: cleaner telephoto shots in low light, and a shorter minimum focus distance. That second point is what the Reddit comparison actually showed, with the Pixel 11 Pro’s telephoto lens locking focus on objects positioned much closer to the camera than the Pixel 10 Pro or 9 Pro could manage, letting it double as a closer-range shooter instead of hunting for focus or failing to lock on at all.

It’s also not an isolated tweak. Google fitted the Pixel 11 Pro with a number of small, unannounced hardware refinements this generation, and the telephoto sensor is simply the one an outside comparison caught first.

A hardware change left out of a software-first pitch

The omission stands out against how this year’s reviews have read. Ars Technica called the Pixel 11 series Google’s most refined lineup yet, but also noted the company made precious few hardware changes in its 2026 phones, and framed its review around whether the Pixel “magic” is fading. Wired titled its verdict on the 11 Pro and 11 Pro XL “Smart Software, Small Upgrade.” Against that consensus, a genuine sensor upgrade, one that changes how close the telephoto camera can focus, is exactly the kind of detail a company accused of coasting on software alone would normally want to publicise rather than leave for a Reddit user to find.

That fits the pattern elsewhere in the coverage: 9to5Google’s review leads with Gemini Intelligence as the standout feature this generation, ahead of the new HiLight function, not with camera hardware. When the pitch is built around software, a genuine sensor change is easy to leave out of the pitch entirely, even when it’s the kind of upgrade a camera-focused buyer would want to know about before choosing between the 11 Pro and a Pixel 10 Pro currently selling at a discount.

What to watch

Whether Google updates its spec sheet or comments on the sensor change will say something about how deliberate the omission was. Until then, Pixel 10 Pro and 9 Pro owners comparing telephoto shots against the 11 Pro now have an explanation for what they’re seeing.

Technology for enthusiasts and gamers. Hardware, gaming and the software in between, with the spec sheets read properly and the marketing taken back out.
